HASTELLOY S alloy was created for applications facing significantly cyclical heating conditions, where components must preserve their strength, ductility, and metallurgical integrity after extended exposure. It is widely employed as seal rings in gas turbine engines, where its low thermal expansion coefficients play a key role.
Unless otherwise indicated, all worked forms of S alloy are delivered in the solution heat-treated condition. The normal heat-treatment temperature is 1950°F (1066°C), which is followed by cooling in air or hydrogen. Because the alloy is extremely stable, cooling rates ranging from slow-furnace cooling to fast ice-brine quenching have no influence on the mechanical characteristics.
HASTELLOY® S Alloy Filler Wire is easily forged and maybe cold worked because of its outstanding ductility. It may be welded using both manual and automatic processes, such as gas tungsten arc (GTAW) and gas metal arc (GMA) (GMAW). Forging should be done at temperatures ranging from 2100°F (1145°C) to 1600°F (871°C) up to the final 20% cross-section reduction. The last 20% reduction should be done between 1900°F (1038°C) and 1500°F (816°C).
